'Revolutionary change in American foreign policy': Canada pivoting towards EU, India and China

François Picard is pleased to welcome Anne Applebaum, Staff Writer at The Atlantic, and author of Autocracy, Inc. According to Applebaum, the upheaval in American diplomacy and foreign policy transcends any one administration. She describes a full-fledged transformation in the way the United States exerts power, pivoting away from leadership of a democratic alliance and toward a transactional mafia-style politics fusing ideology, private economic interests, personal relationships and geopolitical leverage. In Applebaum’s analysis, the consequences are already extending well beyond Washington. Canada has already begun to take a very proactive approach that seeks to foster closer economic and political alliances with the EU and China as Carney reconsiders the once-cozy relationship with the United States both countries enjoyed for many decades; European governments are also forced to confront a much less predictable and increasingly adversarial ally; far-right movements abroad see enormous opportunities for political alignment as the US embraces a more hard-line autocratic style of governing at home and abroad; this has pushed countries across the world to quietly search for alternative economic and security relationships, less dependent on an increasingly combative and impulsive frenemy. What makes her argument particularly striking is that she presents these developments as both a revolution and the beginning of a counter-revolution. Trump’s political model has imitators, she argues, but it is also producing fierce resistance. As confidence in American reliability plunges, governments are beginning to hedge their bets over the longterm, diversify their partnerships and imagine a world in which Washington is no longer automatically at the center of the universe. This might not have been the "America First" that Donald Trump had envisioned. In Applebaum’s telling, we're no longer just facing the uncharted waters of what America might be morphing into at home and on the world stage. We might just be witnessing a new world order unfolding relegating the US to a diminished role in the world brought on by a fiercely isolationist America First "policy" that ironically envisioned a position of world domination. #Trump #Canada #EU 🔔 Subscribe to France 24 now: https://f24.my/YTen 🔴 LIVE - Watch FRANCE 24 English 24/7 here: https://f24.my/YTliveEN 🌍 Read the latest International News and Top Stories: https://www.france24.com/en/ Like us on Facebook: https://f24.my/FBen Follow us on X: https://f24.my/Xen Bluesky: https://f24.my/BSen and Threads: https://f24.my/THen Browse the news in pictures on Instagram: https://f24.my/IGen Discover our TikTok videos: https://f24.my/TKen Get the latest top stories on Telegram: https://f24.my/TGen
