Researchers in Auckland, New Zealand, have found that penguins are more drawn to interacting with harmful white plastic than plastic of other colors. This latest study, conducted at Auckland’s Kelly Tarlton’s Sealife Aquarium, adds to previous research showing that the majority of plastic found in seabirds’ guts is white in color.
Dr. Ariel-Micaiah Heswall, a researcher at the University of Auckland, described white plastic as “a triple threat,” saying that “it’s found more commonly in the ocean, it’s found more commonly in their guts, but now it’s also preferred by the penguins.”
