“The Secret Agent” clip: Refugees

In director Kleber Mendonça Filho’s thriller “The Secret Agent,” set in 1970s Brazil during a period of dictatorship (what the film ironically refers to as a time of "great mischief"), a stranger going by the name Marcelo (best actor Oscar nominee Wagner Moura), who is being sought by hit men, arrives at an apartment building in Recife, which appears to be a haven for political refugees. In this scene, Marcelo learns that many others there are, like himself, seeking to escape the threats of a dictatorship. As Dona Sebastiana says, “Life has bad things, but also good things.” “The Secret Agent,” a Neon release, is nominated for four Oscars, including best picture and best international feature film.
