China opened its doors to international adoption in 1992. Since then, over 150,000 Chinese babies have been adopted by foreign couples. Children, mainly girls, were sent abroad to families in France, the US and elsewhere. But many infants had incomplete, sometimes forged documentation, putting into question the very nature of their presence in an orphanage. An uncomfortable truth that has led some countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands to ban international adoptions. Indeed, at the height of China’s One Child Policy, children were also torn away from their families, abandoned, hidden and kidnapped … as couples sought after one healthy son to carry on the lineage. The adopted babies of that era are now adults. Some are on a quest to discover more about their past.
